Best Neighborhoods for Renting in Ulaanbaatar

Ulaanbaatar, the capital city of Mongolia, is a dynamic metropolis with diverse neighborhoods that cater to various lifestyles and preferences. Choosing the right neighborhood when renting in Ulaanbaatar is essential, as it can significantly impact your living experience. As a proud local of Ulaanbaatar, I can introduce you to the neighborhoods to stay based on my own experience. Whether you’re looking for a place to rent for a short-term stay or looking to make Ulaanbaatar City your second home, we’ll explore some of the best neighborhoods in the city in terms of safety, location, and amenities to suit different needs.

1. Sukhbaatar District – The Heart of The City

I began my quest in Sukhbaatar District, often referred to as our city’s heart. It’s where the iconic Great Chinggis Khaan Square and the National History Museum stand tall, reminding us of our heritage. While it’s known for its corporate vibe, Sukhbaatar District also offers a mix of luxury apartments and corporate housing. For urban professionals like me, this district feels like home, with its proximity to work and countless dining and entertainment options.

Sukhbaatar District is also often referred to as the “Most Intelligent” due to its concentration of political institutions, including the State Palace, Presidential and Parliamentary offices, government ministries, and embassies, as well as international organizations like the UN and the World Bank. It is also home to key political parties such as the Democratic Party and the Mongolian People’s Party, along with numerous other organizations and educational institutions, including the Mongolian Academy of Sciences, the University of Mongolia, and the National Clinical General Hospital, making it a hub of intellect and activity.

2. Khan-Uul District: Nature’s Playground

With the majestic Bogd Khan Mountain as its backdrop, this district is an outdoor enthusiast’s dream. Hiking trails wind through the national park, and the serene surroundings provide a welcome escape from the city’s hustle and bustle. Khan-Uul’s housing options range from modern apartments to traditional homes, catering to those of us who yearn for a quieter, more nature-infused lifestyle.

There is a new Misheel garden situated alongside the Tuul River in Khan-Uul District. It has a perfect view overlooking the river as well as little terraces, food stations, and playgrounds for different sports. The area around the Emart shopping center is the most popular area, making it an ideal location to live, shop, and eat great food. The only issue is that the outskirts neighborhoods of Khan-Uul are located a little far from the city center, so it might take a little time to reach the center. But public transportation makes it easier.

3. Chingeltei District: History and Culture Unveiled

Our primary economic activities in the Chingeltei district revolve around light industry, construction, trade, and communication. Some notable companies include Nomin, Bishrelt, Falcon Food Market, Mars, and Bumbugur, along with telecom operators like Mongolian Telecom, Datacom, Mobicom, Sansar, and Newtel. The district is also home to significant financial institutions, government agencies, and law enforcement entities, including Mongol Bank, Trade and Development Bank, Savings Bank, Golomt Bank, Ulaanbaatar City Bank, Mongol Post Bank, Zoos Bank, and Transport Development Bank.

The housing in this area is quite old. But the best part is that you can feel and experience the heritage and culture of Mongolia in person by renting in this area. Since this district has a mix of old and modern housing options, they tend to be on the cheaper side compared to Sukhbaatar or Khan-Uul district. You will see lots of small restaurants offering local and international foods. There are also several schools and universities so you’ll definitely feel the energetic young vibes walking around this district.

4. Bayanzurkh District: Rapid Development and Diversity

Out of nine districts in Ulaanbaatar, Bayanzurkh is the largest district in the capital and is located in the southeastern part of the city. It has picturesque natural features and proximity to Bogd Khan Mountain. The district is known for its cityscape with elegant buildings, wide streets, and beautiful surroundings. Here, residential neighborhoods harmoniously coexist with bustling commercial zones. It’s a place where you can shop at modern centers, access excellent education, and enjoy a vibrant community. Bayanzurkh offers a variety of rental properties, from budget-friendly apartments to spacious family homes, making it an ideal choice for folks with diverse needs.

Ulaanbaatar’s diverse neighborhoods offer something for everyone, whether you prefer the vibrant city center of Sukhbaatar District, the nature-infused lifestyle of Khan-Uul District, the modern amenities of Bayanzurkh District, or the rich cultural heritage of Chingeltei District. By considering your priorities and preferences, you can make an informed decision and find the best neighborhood for your rental in Ulaanbaatar. Each of these neighborhoods adds its unique charm to the city, ensuring that there’s a perfect spot for you to call home in Mongolia’s vibrant capital.
